Our recommendations

The Jewish-Medieval Heritage of Erfurt is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

Take a very special tour into the early Middle Ages with a guided tour through the exhibition of the Museum Alte Synagoge and the Jewish ritual bath Mikvah. The Old Synagogue is the oldest synagogue in Central Europe that has been preserved up to its roof. Construction began as early as 1100. Rediscovered in recent years, the synagogue has been home to an extraordinary museum since 2009. In addition to the history of the building and its use, the Erfurt Treasure is also on display. This gold and silver find was first unearthed in 1998 during construction work in the old town. This treasure trove in the form of medieval utensils, jewelry and coins is unique in the world in terms of its type and composition. Since September 2023, the ensemble of synagogue, mikvah and the Stone House has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In Luther´s footsteps: Medieval old town

Embark on a journey to the spiritual home of Martin Luther. You will experience all the famous places where the great reformer stayed and worked during his time in Erfurt from 1501-1511. The focus is on the visit to the St. Augustine´s Monastery with the Luther cell and the historic library of the Reformation with over 60,000 books. The St. Augustine´s Monastery itself is the only medieval monastery and convent complex in Erfurt whose original 13th century building fabric has been largely preserved. After the tour, enjoy the monastic ambience during a coffee break with homemade cake or a snack with a delicious monastery stew.
